Nominate your heroes for the Citizen of the Year

Heroes. Every community has them. Beachers like to think that we have more than our share. They are the citizens who coach the peewee hockey team, who deliver meals-on-wheels, who volunteer for Community Centre 55’s Share-A-Christmas or the Lions’ Easter Parade, who write letters and fundraise to save a historic building, or who do acts of kindness like shoveling a senior’s driveway.

Heroes deserve to be recognized, and our community has a mechanism to do so – the Citizen of the Year.

The Citizen of the Year is honoured with a plaque on the Beach Walk of Fame in the Community Garden in Woodbine Park. They also get a special space in the Beaches Lions’ Easter Parade.

Our first Citizen of the Year was Gene Domagala. Last year Glenn Cochrane got the nod. This year it’s up to you. Send us the name of the person who you think deserves to be the third Beaches/East York Citizen of the Year with a short description of why you think your nominee merits the title.

The deadline for entries is Oct. 10, 2003. You can mail your entries to Beach Metro News, 2196 Gerrard St. E., Toronto, ON M4E 2C7; fax them to 416-698-1253; bring it in person to either Beach Metro News or Community Centre 55, 97 Main St. or e-mail it to editor@beachmetro.com. Please include your own name with the entry.

Judges Gene Domagala, Glenn Cochrane, Pat Foster, Bob Murdoch, Sheila Blinoff and Carole Stimmell will announce their decision in the Oct. 14 issue of Beach Metro News. On Oct. 29, a ceremony at the Community Millennium Garden in Woodbine Park will honour the winner.

The people who contribute the most to this community deserve to be recognized. Make it happen.
