The holiday season is here once again and for many of us that means a whirlwind of parties and entertaining.
It also means that it’s time to break out of your hair and make-up rut and get creative, adding a touch of glamour, a little sparkle and a look that says you’re ready to celebrate from now until the new year. Here are a few ways that you can take your party look to the next level in a way that’s festive, fun and most importantly, hassle-free!
Do your Research
Even if your everyday routine consists of little more than a quick swipe of mascara and lip gloss, parties are the time when you can go all out in the hair and make-up department. If you don’t have a lot of experience in make-up application, check out a few online tutorials to get some tips from an expert. Choose one area as your focus – either eyes or lips – to ensure you don’t look overdone; the trick is to look like a more glamourous version of your everyday self, not a kid who has been having fun with their mom’s make-up!
Sparkle and Shine
One of the biggest mistakes people make with their holiday look is overdoing the glitter – you want to add a subtle sparkle, not compete with the fairy lights! Select one or two areas that you want to highlight and use a light touch. Metallic eyeshadows are notorious for settling into creases and accentuating any fine lines so avoid these areas if possible. A dab applied to the inner corner of the lid will brighten and widen the eyes, while a sweep of highlighter along the brow line lifts the area and adds a little drama. Wherever you’re applying shine, make sure you blend well and remember – it’s easier to add than to take away.
Holiday parties are the perfect time to break out of your lipstick comfort zone and opt for shades you might normally shy away from. As local make-up artist Meaghan Gregory (www.mgbeauty.ca) says, when it comes to party lips, “Go bold! Red, plum, bright pink, whatever takes your fancy, play it up! Make sure you have a good lip liner to match so you can frame the lip and feather the colour on to the lip which will create a longer-wearing product.” And, she adds, “Don’t be afraid to over/ under draw your lip for extra plump!”
Lashes that Last
Long, lustrous eyelashes add instant drama to any look and are essential for making the eyes really pop. For the holiday season, it’s definitely worth investing in some false eyelashes or extensions, whether you want to simply enhance what you have with a few single lashes or go all-out with a full set. DIY false lashes have vastly improved in quality and can be added easily and securely – a good lash glue is essential says Meaghan, who favours Duo Adhesive – to give a finished look to your eye make-up. Alternatively, with proper care, professionally applied extensions will last the whole season and save you precious time when rushing from one event to another.
Your crowning glory needs to look just as fabulous as your face, so whether you sport short or long locks, there are a number of ways you can take that party coif to the next level. According to Christina Kolovos, the director of LOVOUX Hair/ Beauty Loft (1956 Gerrard St. E., www.lovoux.com), this year is all about decorated bobby pins, hair scrunchies and braids. “For clients with longer hair, a low ponytail wrapped in a rope braid and accentuated with a scrunchie is beautiful when paired with a dry-texture spray,” she says. Those with shorter styles can “pump up the volume with some hot rollers and brush out for a chic and high glamour coif, finishing with a weightless shine spray.”
